For Tyree Whitworth, writing isn’t just a profession—it’s a lifeline. From crafting poetry as a child to publishing his first book in October 2024, his journey reflects self-discovery, resilience, and finding purpose through the power of words.
Tyree writes under a pseudonym, but he is preparing to make it his legal name—a personal reinvention that marks a new chapter in his life. His business, Tyree Writes, reflects his passion for storytelling. Behind every word, you can find a history of challenges, growth, and triumph over adversity.
“I named my company Tyree Writes because that’s what I do,” Tyree says. His debut novel, Entangled Desires, is now available on major platforms like Amazon, IngramSpark, Lulu and on his website. This modern-day romance novel delves deep into real-life issues—family dynamics, personal trauma, and the choices that shape our futures.
But Tyree’s journey to this point was not easy.
Overcoming the Odds
Tyree’s story began in Queens, NY, where his family gave him up as a child. By the time he was 16, he had already been in and out of jail. He spent years searching for love, acceptance, and belonging. “As a mixed-race kid, I didn’t fit in anywhere,” Tyree reflects. “Not with the Black community, not with the Hispanic community. I didn’t feel like I belonged.”
By the age of 17, he was sentenced to 36 months, with 2 years and 11 months suspended, for defending the woman who brought him into the world—though she never defended him. Upon release, he found himself homeless for 2 1/2 years. At 29, he served another 18 months in prison. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for writing. Incarceration forced him to face his traumas and reflect on his life, and writing became his way to heal and express himself.
“I started with an autobiography to work through my past,” Tyree says. “Writing was therapy for me. It helped me sit down, look at my life, and understand it.”
From Prison to Publication
When Tyree left incarceration, he knew that writing was his new mission. His book Entangled Desires isn’t just a romance novel. It reflects the issues he has faced—mental health struggles, familial relationships, and personal growth. “The book explores how past traumas surface in our present and influence our future decisions. It’s not just a love story; it’s about healing.”
Mental health continues to inspire his writing. His next book dives deeper into this subject, and he is also creating a children’s series inspired by his experience as a father. The series will highlight emotional resilience and the value of patience in parenting.
“I want to write stories that make people think,” Tyree explains. “It’s not about staying in one genre; it’s about creating stories where people feel seen.”
A Unique Perspective on Romance
Tyree brings a fresh voice to the romance genre. As a Black man writing romance, his perspective is rare. “Only 1% of romance writers are men, and even fewer are Black men,” he says. His experiences offer a new angle, especially in today’s complex world of relationships.
Tyree believes many relationships fail because people give up too easily. “At the seven-year mark, many couples start feeling unhappy, and instead of working through it, they leave. But I’ve learned that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Tomorrow isn’t promised, so you have to make the most of today.”
Finding Support in Family
Behind Tyree’s success is a strong support system. His wife, Chelsea, and his godmother, Zena Whitworth, have supported him every step of the way. Chelsea, in particular, pushed him to publish his first book. “I wouldn’t have published this book without her. She helped me face my PTSD and encouraged me to keep going.”
Tyree is also a full-time father, student, and Phi Theta Kappa honor society member and on the dean’s list at Nassau Community College. He balances all these roles while pursuing his passion for writing.
Looking Ahead
As Tyree moves forward, he is just getting started. His dream is to write more books and start a publishing company to help others share their stories. For him, writing is about making a difference. “I want to accomplish something meaningful. I’ve seen that less than 1% of authors make it on their own, but I want to prove it’s possible.”
His journey is one of resilience and transformation. From a troubled youth to a published author, Tyree Whitworth proves that no matter where you start, you can rewrite your future.
